Web3 Basics
How do wallet connection, signatures and token approvals differ?
Identify what each wallet request permits rather than treating every popup as login.
The short answer
Connecting establishes interaction with a wallet; a signature confirms a message or instruction; a token approval may let a specified address operate particular tokens within an allowance. Evaluate the actual wallet request, not just the website button label.
A wallet is not a website password form
An Ethereum wallet helps users interact with an account. A product flow should not ask users to submit private keys or recovery phrases to the website. Scope account identification, identity confirmation and asset operations separately.
Approvals need an explicit recipient and scope
ERC-20 approve and allowance set and read spending allowances. Our interface recommendation is to display the token, recipient and requested amount so users can compare them with the wallet prompt.
Explain states to reduce mistakes
Distinguish connected, awaiting signature, awaiting transaction confirmation and completed states. Provide separate messages for rejection, insufficient allowance and network mismatch, with a result users can look up.
A project checklist
- Check the site, network, token and approval recipient.
- Do not submit recovery phrases, private keys or wallet backups to a website.
- Explain the purpose and resulting state of each confirmation.
Common questions
Is every signature only a login?
No. Signatures can serve different purposes. Inspect the content, requesting origin and related permissions.
Does closing a page revoke token approvals?
Closing a page does not change an on-chain allowance. Review existing permissions through the relevant wallet or contract mechanism.
