DApps & Contracts

What is a smart contract, and what should be checked before launch?

Review contract projects through rules, administrative powers and handover records.

The short answer

A smart contract is a program deployed on a blockchain that processes calls and state changes according to code. Review permissions, exceptional scenarios and deployment records as well as functionality; deployment alone is not a security review.

Describe the rules in business terms

List who may create, change, pause or execute an action, then map those rules to interfaces. Organize acceptance around normal flows, unauthorized attempts and boundary values rather than code length or successful deployment.

Document administrative powers separately

Handover notes should identify administrative powers, upgrade mechanisms and configuration changes. The project team should establish ownership and operating procedures for those powers.

Treat testing and independent review as separate work

Functional tests validate agreed scenarios. Independent review examines potential defects and attack paths. Confirm their scopes, owners and reports separately; a review does not promise absolute future safety.

A project checklist

  • Keep the address, network, source version and deployment record.
  • Document critical powers and their owners without storing private keys.
  • Define deliverables for remediation and retesting.

Common questions

Can a deployed contract ever be changed?

It depends on the design. Upgrade mechanisms or configurable parameters may change behavior and should be explicitly documented.

Is developer testing an independent audit?

No. Confirm the scope, reviewer, report and remediation process for an independent review separately.
